I just found this reading through the archives of Narbonic:

Omnes res aequae
In amore belloque
Et amente sunt.

~irony-chan

In love and war
All things are equal
And insane.

Very good, but what's the the case of Amens, amentis? It looks like an ablative, just like amor and bellum.

OH NO I just got tricked into doing Latin!

Oops, you're right. It's accusative if you take it to mean "thong used for throwing a spear" but I'm not sure that makes sense. Mind, this IS Narbonic...

And where are you? I am bored and under siege!

Accusative? What? I don't understand because I'm slow.

I read it as: All things in love, war, and insanity are equal. But I think this is actually an error by the author: "amente" s/b Amentes if he means "all things are equal AND insane..." which I think is what he/she was going for -- "amens" is a participle or an adjective, not an abstract noun meaning "insanity."

God I sound like a nerd, but this is good brain exercise.

I'm at work! And then I'm going out with Nathan for a bit because we miss each other. I don't think I can do anything tomorrow -- one week into school and I'm already behind in my reading.

If it were amentum, amenti, it would be accusative. But I am with you that it's an author's error.

Yay for seeing Nathan! I'm also behind on reading. I tried to get the photocopies for Medieval Book but the guy at the desk couldn't find them. I was annoyed. I'll see you Monday, then.

An E ending isn't accuastive! If it were amentum, amenti then amentum would be the accusative form (neuter noun yay!) It would be vocative, perhaps, but not accusative. A shame on your beard! (ok, really, I've just been DYING for a chance to use that phrase.)

Yes! Danielle told me that she couldn't find the photocopies either. That's really irritating. I wonder if I should even bother going in there tomorrow to find them. I guess I'll pop by on Monday before class and see. Wanna meet up when you're done Latin?

According to WORDS "amente" is both the nom. pl. and the acc. pl. So HAH! Shame on YOUR beard!

And I'm glad it's not just me with the photocoies. We can meet up after Latin. Kelly?

What? That's not what it's giving me. Are you sure it's not Amenta with an A at the end? And according to all the Latin grammar rules, when is E ever an accusative ending, except maybe in some obscure Medieval use?

Kelly sounds good! what time is class, 3? I'll probably show up around 1-ish.

Maybe there's a glitch in the Mac version. I think that must be it, because I found that odd, too.

And I'll be out of class just after 1.

That's so weird and scary! Another reason you shouldn't rely on Words to give you grammar answers. Internalize those grammar rules! Make the Ablative your FRIEND!

But jeez, that's really scary because that's a pretty hefty mistake for a program to make.

Sure thing! I'll be hanging out in the reading room I guess, probably reading like I should be :P

Boy I'm glad to not be doing Latin this term.

I may see if I can hack the programming. It seems to that to all neuter ablatives. I know it didn't used to do that, and the online version doesn't.

All 3rd declension neuter nouns end with E in the ablative, but not the accusative. Did you maybe mean to say "ablative" above but said "accusative" instead? Cuz that might explain all of our confusion :P (and I am easily confused.)

Also! I am crocheting a bath mat! It's the easiest pattern ever and you MUST HAVE A COPY. It is awesome. You will love to crochet this.

I'm not sure what I meant to say, but what happens is that it gives the correct answer as well as saying that it can be neut. pl. acc. which needs to be amended.

Woo, patterns!

Stupid Words! Fix that jerky program.

I'll bring my crochet joy on Monday. Would you mind if we sat a bit closer in class this time? I swear I'm going blind.

The comic is get-medieval (http://get-medieval.livejournal.com/738.html). Sadly, it's almost done. I love it muchly. It's very well done. She also wrote Wheelock, the Musical! (http://www.ainself.net/irony/latin/index.html) Seriously awesome stuff.
