Latin Woes

I am just not getting this. It's like beating my head against a wall. I just can't make heads or tails of what this writer is saying aside from sorting out the meaning of a given word.

Philosophy is really difficult, especially Eriugena. I can't even wrap my head around the English translation. I'm not sure what the hell he's trying to pull by giving us this in the first week.
