So I e-mailed the prof teaching Celtic history next semester the other day regarding a time conflict, and she replied to me today, saying:

Dear Brenton,

I appreciate the difficult situation you're in and you have my sympathies. Trying to set up a coherent class schedule was always such a hurdle to me when I was an undergrad.

My concern, though, is that the first hour of the class will be a particularly difficult one to miss since all the concepts for that 'thematic chunk' will be introduced then. This will be particularly crucial in the latter half of the course as the text book by Dáibhí Ó Cróinín only really covers the period 400-800 (despite the title's claim that it goes up to 1200). There thus won't really be any secondary material to make easy recourse to for the material that you'll be regularly missing. The missed first hour will also be problematic in terms of testing as all exams will take place in class time. I, therefore, have to reluctantly advise that I don't think that your taking the course is really feasible.

Apologies,
Anne

Alas! vae mihi! This meant that I needed to drop the class and find some classes to make up the gap, pronto. My first thought was to the other class I wanted to take: Apocalypse and the Millennium (I mean, how cool does that sound?), but half of the class is during Middle Welsh, and sorry to say, Melissa, but MW wins out in this case (if I weren't already half-way through the class, the decision would be far harder, I assure you).

So I began working my way through the accepted courses for Linguistics, and it seems that the only class offered next semester that I can both count towards my degree and stand a chance at passing is Language Acquisition. This does not please me. This does not please me at all. So I continued to search. I found, then, as I was going through the courses I could use towards Medieval Studies that there is very, very little, amongst all the regular courses and cross-listed courses, offered that I can take, and most of the little is not offered in the spring. However, in my searchings I found that Latin 100 is accepted as an approved course. And I had not previously included it in my calculations. This means I have a full credit in my pocket that I did not know I had. This pleases me greatly. Greatly enough that I do not feel as wretched taking the Language Acquisition class. And I am considering taking only 4 classes next semester and working an extra day, although we shall see about that latter bit.

Now if I can take my MA Latin this summer and take Middle Welsh II next year and count them both towards my degree...
